Priest in Charge

Richard Hogue Jr. was born in the Chicago area and was baptized and raised as an Episcopalian. At seven years old his family moved to the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in northern Wisconsin. Richard graduated from Wabash College in Indiana with a BA in religion in 2009, then went to work as a volunteer in a medical clinic in a garbage dump slum in Mthatha, South Africa through the Young Adult Service Corps of the Episcopal Church.

After returning to the USA, Richard worked in the Hoboken Homeless Shelter as a Newark ACTS intern. Between 2011-2013, he worked as a missioner at St. John’s, Union City, and All Saints, Hoboken, and as a development officer for the Jubilee Center of Hoboken before discerning his call towards ordained ministry. He completed his MDiv at Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, CA, in May of 2016 and was ordained a priest on September 24th later that year, in the Episcopal Diocese of Newark. Richard then began his work as vicar at Christ Church the next day.

Eager to learn and grow in his ministry here and in his role as Jersey City Area Ministries Missioner (working with the three Jersey City Episcopal churches: Grace van Vorst, Incarnation, and St. Paul’s Bergen), he began his work with both roles with their leaders in earnest in mid-November 2016. Richard is recently married to Maura Schmitz. He is excited about the opportunities that the Christ Church community and Harrison at large hold.

Richard’s main focus is what shapes the gospel for Christ Church and Harrison, and what that means for the ministry of the congregation. As the ordained minister and leader of this Christian community, it is his responsibility to be a pastor, teacher, and lead evangelist for the community. As a leader, he works towards these goals as well as acceptance of all of God’s people with the fellow disciples of Christ Church.

His life outside the church involves walks with Tigger, their family dog. He also enjoys watching the Green Bay Packers, the Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Bulls. He is a Star Trek fan, DS9 being his favorite, as well as a Star Wars fan. Richard also enjoys board games like Settler of Catan and Axis and Allies.
